Relief Printing
I have been fortunate enough to have been trained in both silk-screen and relief printmaking. For a number of years I taught both at secondary school level and in higher education. Since retirement from full-time teaching I have focused on relief printing, mainly using lino and vinyl, wood engraving, and collage. Relief printing is a general term for a number of processes or methods where a printing block that has had ink applied to its surface, but not to any recessed areas, is brought into contact with paper. The areas of the printing block with ink will leave ink on the paper, whereas the recessed areas of the printing plate will leave the paper ink-free. I don’t always use one of the presses for this type of printmaking, simply relying on a wooden spoon or hand pressure. See “how it’s done” as an example of relief printing using the reduction process
